Walking above Wellington

Last weekend we wrapped ourselves up for the Skyline Ridge walk in Wellington’s hills.

We parked in Johnsonville and tackled Mount Kaukau at the start. The ascension took us above the suburban houses, which continued throughout the walk, on our left with rolling hills to our right. City on one side and country on the other. At the top we were rewarded with a 360 viewing platform, from which we could see across to the south island.

The route took us through various suburbs and the city centre. It gives some great views of the harbour. I wouldn’t fancy this walk on a windy Welly day as it’s pretty exposed, our temperature was constantly changing as we went up and down the saddles.

The council walk guide advises that it’s a 12km walk, which will take 5 hours. We might have strayed from the track but we finished the walk in Karori approx 4 hours after we started.

Some things we saw along the way…

  • The 100m BCL TV Transmitter
  • Views of Rimutaka and Tararua ranges, Porirua Basin, Kaikoura ranges and the Tasman Sea
  • Some long-haired sheep

Once we’d found a sheltered spot, the ridge was a wonderful place to eat lunch and look out over the city.

We fell asleep within 10 minutes of getting home.
